Question
What is the best way to document and present a significant CO₂ emissions reduction?
A measurable CO₂ reduction — say a 28% decrease in electricity-related emissions versus the prior year — can support several sections at once.
For the Reporting indicator: the reduction should appear in your sustainability or annual report as a quantified KPI, expressed as an absolute or percentage figure with a clear reference year and scope boundary (Scope 1, Scope 2 location-based or market-based). For the Measures indicator: the reduction evidences an implemented action — the document should describe what was done (renewable-energy procurement, an efficiency investment, a process change), not just the outcome: a project summary, energy audit report or internal management document with dates and scope. For the Coverage indicator: state explicitly what percentage of operations the action applies to — a 28% reduction across 100% of electricity consumption is very different from one site.
An internally created KPI dashboard works well, provided it carries the company name, a date, and clearly covers the reporting period.
