How does the EcoVadis scorecard work?

In brief

"EcoVadis scores sustainability management systems, not just results, empowering organisations to demonstrate genuine ESG commitment."

EcoVadis is the world's leading sustainability ratings platform, trusted by over 150,000 organisations across 185 countries and 250 industries. Unlike performance-only ratings, the EcoVadis rating evaluates the quality of a company's sustainability management system — policies, actions and results — which helps organisations improve continuously and demonstrate achievements through a scorecard and medals.

How is the theme-criteria matrix built?

The backbone of the assessment is a matrix linking the four sustainability pillars with a consistent set of assessment criteria. The pillars:

Each pillar is assessed using seven criteria: policies, endorsements, measures, certifications, coverage, reporting, and 360° Watch. A company must therefore show, for example, robust environmental policies, environmental measures and environmental reporting — and do the same for the other three pillars. The structure gives equal consideration to policy existence, practical deployment, and the effectiveness of reporting and oversight.

What does each assessment criterion measure?

How do scoring and weighting work?

EcoVadis aggregates results for each criterion across the four pillars. Each pillar has its own weight, adjusted for industry and size, prioritising the most impactful areas. Only relevant, "activated" criteria are considered, based on each organisation's risk profile.

Individual scores fall into five bands — 0, 25, 50, 75 or 100 — with the scorecard displaying pillar-by-pillar strengths and improvement areas. The overall assessment benchmarks the company against peers and highlights where targeted action delivers the most value. Negative 360° Watch findings can affect medal eligibility.

Why is your questionnaire not the same as your neighbour's?

When companies register, they provide key data about their industry, size and operations. EcoVadis then activates the subtopics relevant to the company's risk profile under each pillar. A logistics company focused on sea freight might have biodiversity and marine ecosystem impact activated; a professional services firm may not.

The subtopics behind each pillar:

Pillar Subtopics
Environment — Operations Energy consumption & GHGs; Water; Biodiversity; Air pollution; Materials, chemicals & waste
Environment — Products Product use; Product end-of-life; Customer health & safety; Environmental services & advocacy
Labor & Human Rights — Human Resources Employee health & safety; Working conditions; Social dialogue; Career management & training
Labor & Human Rights — Human Rights Child labour, forced labour & human trafficking; Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI); External stakeholders' human rights
Business Ethics Corruption; Responsible information management
Sustainable Procurement Suppliers' environmental practices; Suppliers' social practices

Activated criteria drive the specific questions in the questionnaire, so it stays material and practical: policy existence, implemented controls, certification status, deployment coverage, reporting metrics, and externally monitored risk factors.

Companies may submit up to 55 documents per assessment. The recommended approach is to prepare comprehensive documents that address several questions at once — a sustainability report, an internal KPI dashboard.
